Ooh, Shiny!

It’s been almost a month since we got the first of several pallets of Rolls-Royce and Bentley items from the Rolls-Royce Foundation. If you see our previous blog post , you will see the literal TON of magazines, newsletters, and assorted car parts. Those items are still in the process of being listed in our eBay store .

Before that, we had dealt with the occasional onesie-twosie consignment item or co-op on selling a handful of parts. The floodgates of Heaven have now been opened. Some people offer us the chance to buy assorted lots of automotive items for resale. One person’s pain in the behind is our treasure.

We like having the oddball stuff and the finishing touches in stock. Many times, we have customers who have been looking for months (sometimes years) for the exact right thing. Fewer things are more irritating than a project that is 99% done.

Hence, the recent collection of car emblems and badges we’ve listed in our eBay store .
Part number cross references, my ever-present tape measure, and some elbow grease/polishing will come in handy for the right buyers.

Boxes, boxes everywhere!

Somebody snapped this picture while yours truly was taking a nap. Wrangling boxes is hard work.

Somebody snapped this picture while yours truly was taking a nap. Wrangling boxes is hard work.

There are a ton of automotive magazines here in our shop. Literally – a TON. The freight paperwork that came with this shipment will confirm that I am not exaggerating.

These magazines came from another automotive enthusiast organization in Pennsylvania. Titles include Car and Driver, Hemmings, The Auto Car, Queste, and more. Some of them have already been listed in our eBay store. What you see on eBay right this minute is merely the tip of the iceberg, but more and more are being listed every day.

This shipment also included a box of Rolls Royce and Bentley parts, which you can also find in our eBay store. My goodness, I had almost forgotten how heavy chrome plated items are! The 1974 Corvette that we tore down in 2012 had many chrome items in good shape, as well.

Amazon.com saves the day again!

February 24, 2014 | Posted in Shop Time | By

Isn’t Amazon.com just great? We ordered this this flex hone yesterday:

1-7/8″ (48MM) Flex Hone 320 Grit Aluminum Oxide

The best part is that it was mostly paid for via pocket change. What we do is collect up change (Some of the cars I’ve parted out have had several dollars worth!) and then redeem it for Amazon.com gift certificates at the local CoinStar machine. Unlike redeeming for cash, gift certificate redemption does not charge a percentage of every dollar. Perfect!

The hone should arrive within a few days. It’s one step closer to getting a 1997 Suzuki RM80 back on the road.

This is our next project. It came to us on a trade right before dirtbike weather ended, along with a companion parts bike. The extra parts and accessories from that bike, plus some tooling, should get the RM80 back on the road….er, dirt…in no time. It will then be for sale or trade for other interesting items.

In the meantime, I will be wrapping up some other projects so I can have a full garage bay to dedicate to putting the bike back together.

A little bit about Greyhound Package Xpress shipping

February 6, 2014 | Posted in Helpful Tips, Shipping | By

Every so often, when listing large items, I indicate in the listings that the price is for Greyhound Package Xpress shipping. What is it? It’s a service that Greyhound offers, along with their well-known bus services. Packages under 72 inches long and 100 pounds or less are eligible for this service. The packages are placed in the cargo area, along with luggage, and are shipped to the customer’s closest bus terminal for pickup. Price is calculated by length, weight, and the distance it’s traveling. We drop off packages in Akron, Ohio quite a bit.

Why do I choose this? Sometimes, it’s the most economical way to ship large and/or heavy packages. While a Corvette bumper doesn’t weigh much, its nearly 6 feet in length, combined with its width, would cost $150-$200 to ship via FedEx or UPS, if the package is even within their accepted shipping dimensions. The $80 (or less) that we charge for shipping via Greyhound covers the cost of the shipping, plus the cost of the box, for less than half of what it is via common carrier.

I’ve been shipping with Greyhound for 6 years now, in addition to using other services. I have only ever had one major problem, which is the lowest percentage of error among all of the services I use.

What happens, though, is that sometimes customers purchase an item and don’t realize that 1) the package doesn’t come directly to your door, or 2) the closest terminal is not exactly close.

As far as #1 goes, there are a few options. Some locations (but not all) can offer door-to-door service for an additional fee. Customers can also ask for a shipping upgrade to FedEx or UPS, also for an additional fee. Please note that this does NOT include packages that are outside of the common carrier’s weight or dimensions limit.

For #2, my recommendation is to check the Greyhound Package Xpress website at http://www.shipgreyhound.com before buying. Find the closest terminal that is convenient to your home, job, or some other location. Call the number to verify that the location does, in fact, accept packages and has hours convenient to you. In some parts of the country, the closest terminal can be over an hour away. In other parts (like New York,) there is a wider selection of terminals, but some are easier to get to than others. It’s OK to express a preference as to where you want your package to go. However, if picking up a package won’t work for you, please keep in mind that I may or may not be able to ship a particular package by any other method.

This is Greyhound Package Xpress shipping in a rather long nutshell. I won’t throw you under the bus, but your packages will be there 🙂

Those are some funny-looking sports cars!

January 30, 2014 | Posted in Humor, Shop Time | By

Sometimes, I look around the garage and see (or trip over) stuff that is decidedly not sports car material. WJ Jeep parts. An ATV. Maybe a dirtbike or two. Eclectic collectibles. And more.

PT Cruiser. Definitely not a sports car.

In what language does “Sportscar Salvage” translate into “PT Cruiser?”

We definitely speak barter. In dealing with small business owners and others in the community, sometimes cash is at a premium and we get items in exchange for goods or other services. This doesn’t bother me; in fact, sometimes I uncover some real treasure troves in the process. 🙂

I will say, though…Speaking of PT Cruisers, I don’t always encounter rear seats, but when I do, they weigh 100+ pounds. I’m glad I was able to sell those to a local customer in need of new rear seats.

Visit our eBay store at http://stores.ebay.com/sportscarsalvage and you’ll see many of these “funny looking sports car” items online. The “Oddities” and “Other” store categories feature the more obscure items. Happy shopping, and stay warm!

A very Merry Christmas is upon us!

December 11, 2013 | Posted in Uncategorized | By

All of us from Sportscarsalvage.us would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season. I am coming up on my first anniversary as well 🙂

Our latest project is tearing down a rather odd-looking sports car. Specifically, it’s a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.

It came to us due to a blown motor. While it looked like this picture a week or so ago, it’s almost completely torn down now.

The parts are being listed in our eBay Motors store slowly but surely. The front and rear suspension has already been claimed, plus the transmission is being prepared for a sale. Other than that, as of this posting, everything else is up for grabs. Hood, seats, seat belts, dashboard, bumpers…it’s all here.

Visit our online storefront over the holidays and check back for periodic sales!

Giving Thanks

November 21, 2013 | Posted in Uncategorized | By

We at Sportscarsalvage.us are thankful to be celebrating three years in business. We’re running an eBay Motors sale through this upcoming Sunday.

Our latest project is a rather funny-looking sports car. Okay, it’s a dirtbike. We’re going to combine the good bike with the parts bike, plus buy some needed engine parts. Please oh please don’t allow me or my husband to fall in love with it.

With the holidays coming up, we’re trying to raise some extra cash to make Santa’s reindeer fly a little higher. Check back in our eBay store for sales every so often. 🙂

Welcome to Fall!

September 22, 2013 | Posted in Pontiac, Shipping, Shop Time | By

Here at Sportscar Salvage, we’ve been busy wrapping up some projects and starting new ones. We happened upon a 1987 Suzuki LTE230H quad in a trade. It will be a fun ride with the right person and a little TLC. I just have other projects in mind right now 🙂

We parted out a 1986 Pontiac Firebird with an automatic transmission and are listing the last of the parts. It had most of the exterior body panels, transmission, interior plastic trims, door hardware, and the T-tops. You can find those Firebird parts here in our eBay store.

All has been going well here. We had some friends over to help re-organize the garage in preparation for this most recent part-out project. Our shipping department got a makeover as well! It’s been a big help, especially in getting the larger packages shipped more quickly.

Earlier this month, we had the privilege of delivering an Allied Fiberglass Astra GT kit cat body to a customer in Virginia. Something I love about what we do is being able to supply the things that people have been searching for for months – sometimes even years! Quite a few customers we’ve had from Australia fall into this category. It was a nice weekend trip, and we even got to visit with a friend on the way.

Switching Gears

Pun fully intended….Har har har!

Summer brings with it a host of yard sales, trading, bartering, and swap meets. We acquired a Suzuki LT230 4-wheeler. It runs, plus it comes with a large cooler full of extra parts. I’m working on fixing a small oil leak on the bottom of the engine. Pictures are forthcoming. So is an afternoon of, “I fixed it, therefore I will ride it around the parking lot” but I’ll treat myself to that after the job is done. Right now, I’ve been perusing forums and YouTube videos for some general help and information.

Here is one of the sites I’ve been using for information: https://sites.google.com/site/suzukilt230svault/Home

June 16, 2013 | Posted in Family, Pontiac | By

Here are some shots of the Fiero after mechanical work but before body work. I’d like to wish all of the fathers, step-fathers, grandfathers, and anyone who has assumed a fathering role a Happy Father’s Day. Sending love and light to those who are missing Dad today.
